Radio Brockley Pays Tribute to Peter Young

Former Capital Radio and Jazz FM presenter Peter Young, often nicknamed “PY the Pork Pie”, sadly passed away this week.

Peter had a very special connection to Radio Brockley, having made his first radio appearance on the station way back in 1969, when he accompanied a friend of his who was volunteering at the time. He presented for 20 minutes on the station and his radio career never looked back.

He then went on to present the long running “Soul Cellar” programme across a number of UK commercial stations, including on Capital Radio from 1979. He also hosted Drive on Radio Mercury when it launched in 1984. He was one of the original presenters on Jazz FM when it launched in 1990. He finally stepped down from his regular programme in 2017 due to ill health.

In 2006, he came back to Radio Brockley for our Ruby Anniversary celebrations and hosted a full hour slot, looking back at the music of 1969. Alan Joyce, who helped organise the event, recalls:
“Peter, being the absolute pro that he was, took great pride in the show he did on RB. I remember he put as much preparation and effort into researching the tracks he was playing as any other show he ever did. He even asked for a copy of the programme afterwards. He was a great guy, and it was a real pleasure for us all to have met him”.
