Radio Brockley to Unveil All-Time Most Requested Songs
As part of our 40th anniversary of the Radio Brockley Request Chart this year, a special live show will be broadcast to announce the Top 40 most requested songs of all-time, as chosen by patients at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital since 1985.
Earlier in the year, Elvis Presley was revealed as being the most requested artist over the last 40 years, ahead of Queen and Frank Sinatra.
On Sunday 7th December, David Rauch and Macie Lewis will reveal which songs have been the most popular with patients since the chart started 40 years ago. Here are a few contenders for the all-time number one.
“LADY IN RED” Chris De Burgh
The only song to top our annual request chart on three separate occasions – in 1986, 1997 and 2000. The track has been a consistent favourite over the last 40 years and didn’t miss our chart at all between 1990 and 2007.
“MY WAY” Frank Sinatra
Unbelievably the song has never topped our annual chart, although it has finished as our runner-up on no less than four occasions, and has made our chart 31 times over the last 40 years!
“ANGELS” Robbie Williams
Released in 1997, it was the breakthrough solo record for Robbie Williams and has been a regular on our chart ever since. It topped our chart in 2002 but was runner-up on a further four occasions.
“WIND BENEATH MY WINGS” Bette Midler
This song was a bit of a slow burner. Released in 1989, it didn’t make our chart until four years later but has since racked up 27 appearances on our Top 40 and has been a firm favourite on the adult wards over the years.
“BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY” Queen
This topped our annual chart in 1992, and has been in our request chart for the majority of the time since. It topped the UK charts twice and has appealed across the generations throughout the last 40 years.
“HAPPY” Pharrell Williams
Perhaps the most popular song of the last 20 years on the request chart, but how high could it go on our all-time list? It topped our annual chart in 2014 and 2023, and was very close to making it two more in 2015 and 2016.
Find out the full countdown on Sunday 7th December between 4-7pm on Radio Brockley.
