Radio Brockley to Broadcast Matt Monro Series

Radio Brockley is to broadcast a four-part special on Matt Monro over the festive period, entitled “The Boy From Shoreditch”.

In the year that would have seen Matt Monro celebrate his 90th birthday, his daughter Michele has produced a special series which looks back at his life and his recordings.

The singer, who was dubbed the “Shoreditch Sinatra” scored many hits back in the 1960s including “Portrait Of My Love”, “Softly As I Leave You”, and the Bond theme “From Russia With Love”. He also sang the Oscar winning song “Born Free” and finished second in the Eurovision Song contest back in 1964.

Michele took time out to speak to our very own Ron Laver to tell us all about the special four-part documentary, and to relive some great memories of the legendary singer, who still receives many requests to this day.

You can hear the interview with Ron at the link below, and you can tune in to the documentary on Radio Brockley at 8pm on four consecutive nights over Christmas, starting on Wednesday 23rd December.
